Arabian Nights Annexe
South East Coast – Price Guide: From £35.00 per person Bed and Breakfast
Termed “Annexe”, it is actually larger than the adjacent Arabian Nights Hotel, and much more up-market. The standard of rooms and facilities are what one gets in hotels which have much higher rates, so we consider Arabian Nights Annexe excellent value for money.
Location
In the village of Paje on the south east coast about 45 minutes drive from the Airport and Stone Town.
Accommodation
There are 18 en-suite rooms all with air conditioning, balconies, traditional Zanzibari beds with mosquito nets, telephone, satellite TV and all have beach/sea views.
Facilities
The swimming pool is set in attractive gardens leading directly to the beach. There is a bar and restaurant within the main reception and lounge area. Adjacent to the hotel is a Buccaneer Dive Centre which is PADI 5 Star accredited which also offers snorkelling excursions. Kite surfing is easily accessible and Paje is one of the best kite surfing locations on Zanzibar. Internet access is available.
Azanzi Beach Hotel

The hotel has been imaginatively designed and built to provide all the facilities discerning travellers will require on a relatively small site. An interesting feature is the “indoor” swimming pool ensuring that the water is cool and refreshing, also being a focal point to the bar and lounge area.

On the north east coast approximately 1 hour from the Airport and Stone Town and fronting on to the palm fringed beach.
Accommodation
There are 35 rooms in different categories8 Standard Room, 12 Luxury Rooms, 9 Villas and 6 Deluxe Villas. All rooms are furnished to a very high standard with air conditioning, king size beds, hair dryers, mini-bar, safe and tea and coffee making facilities. The Luxury Rooms have a shower and bath, whilst the Villas have both in door and out door showers. The Deluxe Villas have their own Jacuzzi on the patio. 8 of the Luxury Rooms have inter-connecting doors, ideal for families. 4 of the Luxury Rooms have beach/sea views.
Facilities
There are two bar areas, one beside the swimming pool and the other on an elevated deck with views out to the ocean and Mnemba Atol. This bar has a sumptuous lounge area. Beakfast is served on the opposite elevated deck. The main dining room is on the elevated deck opposite the Mnemba view bar. There is a well stocked curio shop, a spa, games room, TV room and conference/private function room. The hotel can arrange a wide range of excursions. Non motorised water sports are included in the accommodation rates. Diving is arranged through a nearby PADI dive centre.
Echo Beach Hotel

With just 9 spacious villas set in a 5 acre site offering privacy and fronting one of the most attractive beaches on Zanzibar.
Location
The hotel is approximately 55 kilometres from the Airport and Stone Town close to the fishing village of Bwejuu towards the north of the south-east peninsular. It takes a little under an hour to get there from Town.
Accommodation
The nine individually furnished and airconditioned villas offer very spacious accommodation, each with a sea view. Their construction of local stone and traditional “makuti” (palm thatch) roofs mean they blend perfectly with the local environment. They are positioned so as not to be overlooked either by other villas or from the public areas. The owner/managers, Andrew & Sue Page, have furnished the villas to a very high standard with an imaginative mix of imported and locally sourced furniture and fitting. The verandahs are expansive, have views of the Indian Ocean and are furnished so that guests can relax in comfort, and a dining table for private dining should guests wish. Toilet/shower rooms boast “wet areas”, imported Italian tiles as well extremely high specification shower and tap fittings.
Facilities
There is a beach side swimming pool with adjacent Jacuzzi. The open sided bar area is furnished with traditional hand carved Zanzibari furniture combined with imported designer fabrics. One of the high points of the hotel is the restaurant, personally supervised by Andrew with his French training, and is known for the quality of its fresh locally sourced ingredients and the imaginative local and international menus. The restaurant is tastefully decorated in white and turquoise to blend with its beach-side setting. There is a dive centre on site and the hotel has its own boat which takes guests on snorkelling trips.
Flame Tree Cottages

We consider Flame Tree the most charming small hotel at the north of the island. The individually designed guest cottages are owned and managed by Seif and Elizabeth Miskry (Zanzibari/Scottish couple) who are perfect hosts and are well supported by their obliging staff.
Location
In the lush and spacious gardens (which lead to the beach) of the owner’s house, this tasteful development is in the fishing village of Nungwi.
Accommodation
There are 18 en-suite rooms, some with partial sea views, others with garden views. The generous sized rooms are pristine, with white tiled floors, traditional furnishings, mosquito nets, built-in wardrobes, fridges and are airconditioned. Some have access to small fitted kitchens with refrigerator; some rooms have a separate sitting area. One cottage is ideal for a family, or small group, as it has 2 separate bedrooms with a common sitting room/kitchenette. There is also a Honeymoon Suite.
Facilities
Flame Tree has a swimming pool, making it one of the very few small hotels in Nungwi which has this beneficial facility for guests. Breakfast is either served on the verandah of guests’ rooms or in the dining area overlooking the gardens. Evening meals are served al-fresco at candle lit tables overlooking the ocean. Flame Tree is close enough to several lively bars/restaurants to take advantage of what these offer, yet you can retreat to the peace and quiet of the Cottages. Seif & Elizabeth have their own mashua (small local dhow) and organise snorkelling trips with picnic lunch to Mnemba Atoll and Kendwa, deep sea fishing, line fishing and the ever popular sunset sail. Kichanga Lodge

Kichanga Lodge is a relatively small mid-range hotel with just 23 villas and bungalows set in luxuriant gardens with its own private beach frontage.
Location
The Lodge is located about 65 kilometres from Stone Town and the Airport on the northern tip of the south east peninsular. It takes about 1 hour to get to Kichanga.
Accommodation
The very spacious and nicely furnished bungalow rooms are in African style with large beds, mosquito nets, ceiling fan, safe, mini-bar, hair dryer, wardrobe and en-suite bathroom with shower. Kichanga’s bungalows and villas are made of stone with large wooden terraces with “makuti” thatch roofs. There are 18 double bungalows, 12 with panoramic beach & ocean views and 6 with garden views, 3 villas and 1 suite. Some of the bungalows have inter-connecting doors which are suitable for families.
Facilities
There is a swimming pool overlooking the beach/ocean. The main building accommodates the bar and restaurant, reception area and internet/telephone facility. There is a PADI dive centre on site which provides courses for all levels as well as diving for experienced divers. The area provides rewarding snorkelling when people go out with the dive boat. Mountain bikes are available to ride for miles along the south east beach of Zanzibar and explore the fishing villages on this stretch of coast. The open sided restaurant has uninterrupted views over the beach and ocean and serves local dishes, especially fish, as well as international and Italian cuisine. Adjacent to the restaurant is the main bar and there is another bar beside the swimming pool. There is a massage area on the beach.
Langi Langi Beach “Bungalows”

We have known Langi Langi for many years and have seen it develop in to what we think is one of the premier hotels in Nungwi.
Location
In the heart of the interesting fishing village of Nungwi at the very north of the island about 1 hour from Stone Town and the Airport.
Accommodation
There are 35 rooms in a variety of categories. All rooms are en-suite, have air-conditioning, ceiling fans, mosquito nets, fridge, telephone and safe deposit box. There are 15 Garden View Rooms which are compact, have small balconies and are ideal for people on a limited budget. The 7 Pool View Rooms look over the swimming pool and lush tropical gardens. We tend to book in the sea facing rooms/suites, all with direct sea views, a balcony and furniture and fittings which rival some of the best and most expensive hotels on Zanzibar. There are 5 Sea View Rooms, 3 Junior Suites and 5 Royal Zanzibari Suites of exceptionally generous size.
Facilities
The good size swimming pool is set in the lush tropical gardens. The Marhaba Restaurant has one of the prime locations in Nungwi, if not Zanzibar, built on a deck over the beach/ocean where the dhows and fishing boats glide past. Traditional Zanzibari food is served, with an emphasis on fresh seafood. The Marhaba Café serves fresh coffees, teas and pastries. There is a massage deck, internet café, money change facility and full office service facility. A novel touch is that “Sele”, the amiable Manager of Langi Langi conducts cooking classes using locally produce and local dishes.
Matemwe Beach Village

The Hotel is set adjacent to an attractive beach and provides a level of service, facilities and meals normally associated with more expensive hotels.
Location
The hotel is about 1 Km south of Matemwe village and relatively easily accessible to Stone Town by tarmac road, the trip taking only 45 minutes.
Accommodation
There are 17 “standard” en-suite rooms some of which are close to the beach, others are set back a little. There are 2 airconditioned room, all others have ceiling fans. The Asali Suite is a treat for honeymooners with extremely spacious accommodation and its own plunge pool. There are 6 new “suite” rooms which are much larger than the standard rooms and also have a roof terrace.
Facilities
There is a central lounge, bar and relaxation area with board games and a small library. The open sided restauran One Ocean Dive Centre has a centre at Matemwe Beach for scuba diving and snorkelling. This is one of the closest locations to the famous Mnemba Atoll, one of the best dive sites in the Indian Ocean.
Mchanga Beach Lodge

Mchanga Beach Lodge is a small upper mid-range hotel with just 8 rooms fronting on to one of the nicest stretches of beach on Zanzibar. Owned and managed by Thomas & Gloria they bring their wealth of experience to making guests feel very at home. This is a place to total chill-out.
Location
The Lodge is located on the north east coast about 45 kilometres from Stone Town and the Airport. It takes about 1 hour by car to get to Mhchanga.
Accommodation
There are 10 rooms comprised of 6 Sea View Lodge Rooms (with direct sea views) and 4 Garden Suites which do have some views of the beach and ocean. All rooms are en-suite with ceiling fans and are airconditioned. They are tastefully furnished with locally made furniture, including traditional Zanzibar 4 poster beds. The Garden Suite Rooms are larger than Sea View Lodges and are individual cottages with their own relatively private outside sitting areas. The “baraza” sitting area (built-in sitees) can be converted to 2 single beds making the Garden Suites very suitable for families.
Facilities
There is a sweet-water swimming pool adjacent to the beach/ocean. The open air restaurant has views over the garden to the beach and ocean beyond. The “Bar Under The Palms” is built around coconut palms and also has views to the beach and ocean. Beach “bandas” provide shade for those who do not want direct sunlight. The hotel has a small shop and a semi-enclosed reading/games room. There is a small spa located adjacent to the beach. Mchanga Lodge has arrangements with a nearby dive centre for people to dive or snorkel near the famed Mnemba Atol. The Hotel can also arrange other water based and land based and excursions.
Next Paradise Boutique “Resort”

Opened in 2009 this “boutique” Hotel provides the level and range of facilities expected in a larger “resort” style hotel, but being small provides guests with an attentive and personal service.
Location
On the north east coast near the unspoiled fishing village of Pwani Michangani (meaning “white sand” in Swahili) approximately 1 hour from Stone Town and the Airport. The Hotel has a prime location on one of the best beaches on Zanzibar which stretches for several miles either side of Next Paradise.
Accommodation
There are just 12 rooms ranging in size from 35 sq m to the Honeymoon Suite of 95 sq m. Some rooms have direct sea views and all rooms have views from their verandah. Rooms are furnished and equipped to a very high standard, elegantly decorated with hand carved solid wood furniture and tasteful oriental fabrics. They are airconditioned, have generous sized en-suite bathrooms with extra large showers, bidet, hair dryers, bath robes are provided for guests, anti-allergy mattresses with imported cotton sheets and mosquito nets, mini-bar, safe, internal telephone.
Facilities
The open sided bar and restaurant looks out over the gardens and swimming pool to the ocean. The Mediterranean/Swahili menu has an emphasis on fresh fish sourced from local fishermen on the day of the catch. Sun loungers are available at the swimming pool area as well as close to the beach. Scuba diving and snorkelling is arranged with good access to some of the best sites off Zanzibar with close access to the famed Mnemba Atoll; other water sports are also arranged. Pongwe Beach Hotel

This ever popular Hotel, owned & managed by Val Preston, provides excellent mid-range accommodation. Bookings have to be made many months in advance to get availability.
Location
Less than an hour drive from Stone Town, the hotel is in a very private position and, in our view, on one of the most attractive beaches on Zanzibar. It combines the wide expansive beaches for which Zanzibar is renown, yet is secluded and with the bonus of being able to retreat in to the shade of the palm trees in front of the Hotel.
Accommodation
The 10 thatched en-suite rooms, with Moroccan style walk-in showers, are a good size and are in four cottages, two cottages have 2 rooms and two cottages have 3 rooms. The rooms have traditional Zanzibari furniture, good mosquito nets, fans (but no air conditioning), private verandahs. The Sea View Cottages have beach/ocean views ideal for early risers wanting spectacular views of the sunrise, and to have a leisurely breakfast. The Garden Cottages are set back a little and we think give additional privacy.
Facilities
There is a spacious bar/restaurant area which has an open front looking out over the beach/ocean. Meals are more than acceptable; the fish curies we have had are memorable. On Friday nights tables are set on the beach for moonlight dinners and special meals can be made to order. The Hotel has its own boat to take guests to the deep waters beyond the reef and scuba diving can be arranged with a dive centre. Snorkelling trips to Mnemba Atoll can also be arranged. There is an infinity swimming pool overlooking the beach and ocean.
Seasons Lodge

Developed by Michael Clarke, who owns and manages this very new small hotel. It has been built using as much natural material as possible with eco-sensitivity in mind. Being small, guests are provided with a very individual service.
Location
Less than an hours drive from Stone Town and the airport, directly on the beach in the Pongwe locality of the north east coast. It is in a quiet location with no large hotels nearby.
Accommodation
There are 10 rooms, 7 of which are individual thatched en-suite villas, and 3 en-suite rooms are located on the first floor of the main hotel building. The villas have double beds and the 1st floor rooms are twin rooms which can be occupied as triple. All villas and rooms have uninterrupted sea views. The villas/rooms have been specifically designed to take advantages of the prevailing breezes, keeping the rooms cool without needing energy consuming air conditioning. The villas have extensive folding louvered doors which gives a feeling of openness. The villas also have their own small private walled tropical garden entered through a traditional Zanzibari door, and large verandahs at the front giving direct access to the beach. The rooms and villas have exposed natural stone walls and polished coconut floorboards.
Facilities
There are two bars, the main “Bar es Salaam” and the beach side “Temple Bar”. The main restaurant is stylishly furnished and whilst seafood is a specialty, international meals are also served and flavoured with the spices of the island. Snack lunches can be served at the beach-side bar. There are kayaks for guests use and the Hotel has its own boat to take guests to, and beyond, the reef for snorkelling. Mountain bikes are available for hire. A wide range of excursions can be organised for guests. The gardens are mainly of indigenous trees and plants, a pineapple and banana plantation, a herb garden and numerous papaya trees.
Shooting Star Lodge

We think one of the best located hotel on Zanzibar, set on a rise overlooking one of the finest stretches of palm fringed beaches on the island. Owned and managed by Elly M’langa and set in pretty tropical gardens; it is a place for total relaxation.
Location
North of the village of Kiwengwa, the Shooting Star Lodge is just 1 hours drive from Stone Town.
Accommodation
There are 11 large Sea View Cottage Rooms which are en-suite, airconditioned and furnished in traditional Zanzibari style; the verandahs have uninterrupted views over the ocean. 4 of the Sea View Cottage Rooms have an upstairs area with 2 single beds making them suitable for families, or for couples wanting some additional space. There are 3 Lodge rooms which look out over the gardens.
Facilities
The open air restaurant serves local African/Zanzibari food and international cuisine and there is a well stocked bar. There is a small semi-circular “infinity” swimming pool, arguable one of the best located pools on Zanzibar. The Beach Bar, with adjacent thatched sun shades, is popular with guests and passers-by. There is a small spa area located adjacent to the beach, and there is a small shop. There is an arrangement with a larger hotel some mile down the beach to use their facilities including the dive centre which can arrange scuba diving and snorkelling. Elly can arrange visits to the village of Kiwenga, the nearby inland cave, hire of bicycles, and excursions to other parts of the island.
Honeymoon/Family suites
The 2 magnificent airconditioned suites are ideal for honeymooners looking for luxury and a bit of seclusion and they also provide good accommodation for families. The suites are set on the crest of the hill apart from the main hotel guest rooms. Each suite is laid out on 3 floors with 2 bedrooms and each has a private swimming pool, set amidst a tropical garden. They are furnished with stunning traditional Zanzibar furniture and batik linen. From the roof of the Villa panoramic views can be enjoyed from the bathtub and there is a fully netted bed so that the fabulous starry night skies can be enjoyed.
Sunshine Hotel Matemwe

Sunshine Hotel Matemwe is a 16 bedroom hotel opened in 2010 and has been specially designed to be ecologically responsible. It has no pretences to be a luxury “resort” hotel but provides accommodation and service of a very good standard.
Location
Sunshine Hotel is located right on the beachfront in the village of Matemwe on the north east coast approximately 1 hour from the Airport and Stone Town.
Accommodation
There are 16 rooms the majority of which have sea views. The 12 Sea View Suites are in 3 chalets each with 4 Suites, 2 on the ground floor and 2 on the first floor. There is a spacious Honeymoon Suite with its own private garden/beach are and a Jacuzzi. The Blue Breeze Suite is located above the Honeymoon Suite with similar dimensions and a large balcony. There is a Garden Room and Garden Apartment (on 2 levels) which do not have sea views. All rooms are en-suite and have double/twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling fans, safe deposit box, wardrobe and spacious balcony (not Garden Rooms). Rooms do not have air conditioning as they have been specifically designed to take advantage of cooling breezes.

The restaurant serves international and local dishes and there is a bar and lounge area. There is Wi-Fi access. The infinity swimming pool is set next to the beach; there are shade areas near the pool and sunshades with sun-loungers on the beach. There is a boutique adjacent to Reception. The Hotel can arrange a variety of excursions and scuba diving and snorkelling is provided by a nearby dive centre.
Uroa Bay Beach Resort

Opened in mid 2010, and named after nearby fishing village, the hotel is currently offering accommodation at very competitive rates for an Hotel of this quality.
Location
The hotel is approximately 30 kilometres from the Airport and Stone Town at the southern part of the north east coast. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from Town.
Accommodation
There are 40 rooms, set in the spacious tropical garden, and are in three categories; Sea Front, Sea View and Garden Rooms. 24 rooms can accommodate an additional bed in comfort. The en-suite, air conditioned rooms have private verandas, fridge/mini-bar, safes, flat screen TV with satellite channels, internet connection and telephone. The high quality furnishings are a fusion of European and local Zanzibari with king size double beds and mosquito nets. Rooms are in thatched cottages, some with 4 rooms (2 on the ground and 2 on the upper floor) and some with 2 ground floor rooms.
Facilities
The large, thatched main building houses the reception area, a very large restaurant, the “Bar Rafiki” and sitting areas with views over the gardens to the beach. There is also the Pwani Bar which is nearer to the swimming pools and beach. There are two fresh water swimming pools, one is shallow and designed for children and the larger, deeper pool has massage jets. The pools are surrounded with a generous sized paved area with sun loungers. There are also thatched shade umbrellas on the brilliant white beach. The Hotel can arrange a wide range of excursions and tours for their guests.
Board Basis
Guests can choose from All Inclusive, Full Board, Half Board or Bed and Breakfast. We feel the All Inclusive rates offer good value for money. As the alternatives for eating are not close by, we certainly suggest Full Board.
The Zanzibari Hotel

The Zanzibari Hotel is a small upper-mid range hotel which opened in 2009. Being small, guests enjoy very personal attention.
Location
The Zanzibari is on the very northern coast of Zanzibar accessible to the interesting village of Nungwi. It is approximately 1hours drive from Stone Town and the Airport.
Accommodation
At The Zanzibari there are just 8 en-suite rooms and 2 Suites. The en-suite rooms have a bath and separate shower. All rooms have a verandah with stunning views of the ocean. They have air-conditioning, tea/coffee making facilities, a refrigerator and safe. Rooms are double or twin and a third bed can be added to make a triple, if necessary. The rooms are located in a two storey building. There are 2 Suites, each with their own swimming pool. Each Suite has 2 en-suite bedrooms. The bedroom on the upper floor is open fronted. The separate lounge is comfortably furnished, has TV and sliding doors lead to the patio, garden and swimming pool.
Facilities
The spacious restaurant and bar area enjoys magnificent views over the gardens and out to the beach and ocean. On site there is a water sports centre, swimming pool, spa and TV lounge. Sea kyaking is available and arrangements can be made for kiting and deep sea fishing. The hotel can arrange a variety of excursions. Beside the beach there are loungers, permanent “umbrellas” and hammocks. The Hotel boasts three imaginative fresh water “rock pools” built at the cliff edge where guests can sit and cool off while appreciating stunning views of the beach and ocean.
The Z Hotel

The Z Hotel is a contemporary, multi-story hotel right in the middle of the village of Nungwi.
Location
In the fishing village of Nungwi at the very north of Zanzibar about a one hours drive from the Airport and Stone Town.

The 35 rooms are designed, furnished and equipped to a standard which is different to anything else on Zanzibar, described as “eclectic” being a mix of design, furniture and fittings. Rooms are in 6 categories; Superior Rooms are on the lower floors of the hotel and the majority have sea/beach views; Deluxe Rooms are on the 2nd floor and all have panoramic beach/ocean views; Family Suites have 2 interconnecting bedrooms with a king size bed and one room with twin beds; at the very top of the range, and of the hotel, the 2 Rooftop Suites and one Z Suite offer facilities for the most discerning guests, 360 degree views with extensive living and terrace/balcony space.
